Lets face it. There’s almost nothing worse than trying to put together an outfit for an event, wedding, shower, or graduation when the dress code is undisclosed.
In college, I would frequently find myself in this situation. The panic would set in and I would mentally race through every item in my closet, desperate to find a “safe” option. If I knew someone attending, I’d always ask what they were wearing. But what if you’re a guest or a date and don’t know anyone else going? What then?
1. Start with the Venue
Where is the event taking place? A chic downtown restaurant or a cozy backyard? The location can tell you a lot. Also, think about the host and the guest list. Are they more laid-back or polished? These clues can help you gauge what “appropriate” looks like.
2. Understanding Overdressed vs. Underdressed
Being overdressed means you’ve gone a little too formal for the occasion. While it can sometimes make you feel out of place, it also shows confidence and effort.
Being underdressed, on the other hand, can read as too casual or even careless, especially if everyone else put in more effort.
If you’re truly unsure, don’t hesitate to reach out to the host for a little guidance. It’s a thoughtful question that shows you care about the event.
3. Be Ready to Adjust
If you suspect you might be overdressed, bring items that can tone your look down, like a denim jacket, a cardigan, or a pair of sneakers. These small swaps can instantly make your outfit feel more relaxed without sacrificing style.
4. When in Doubt, Go Overdressed
It’s always easier to dress down an elevated outfit than to dress up a casual one. A sleek dress or tailored jumpsuit can easily become more casual with flats or sneakers, while the reverse is much harder to pull off.
5. Confidence Is the Best Accessory
At the end of the day, the best thing you can wear is confidence. At ELLX, we believe in finding that perfect balance: pieces that are casual yet elevated, or dressy yet effortlessly standout. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, you’ll always look the part, no matter the dress code.
